A New Institute for the New Information Society
Institute for InfoSocionomics, Kumon Center (New Institute for Social Knowledge and Collaboration)
Named after its Executive Director Prof. Shumpei Kumon, Kumon Center is a new social science research institute established in January 2004 in Tokyo to study the current policy and governance issues regarding the Information Society, or study of InfoSocionomics, a new term coined by Prof. Kumon.
Our objective is to contribute to the development of the Information Society through academic research and education together with social practices and sharing its outcome with the society at large.
Professor Shumpei Kumon, our Executive Director, has been devoted himself to the study of Information Society since the 1970s at University of Tokyo, then he headed GLOCOM, Center for Global Communications at the International University of Japan, in the 1990s where he actively promoted Japan’s informatization in collaboration with like-minded people in industry, government, academia and Non-profit sectors both at home and abroad.
The IIS will promote the study of “Infosocionomics” (study of Information Society as a whole) as the comprehensive social science discipline and publish its outcomes. The New Institute aims to play a pioneering role of “intelprise” to become a center of excellence of social science research in the 21st century.
Our Approach to Infosocionomics
Infosocionomics is a comprehensive study of all aspects of Information Society as a maturing phase of the modern society. Late Professor Yasusuke Murakami , our leader and mentor, dedicated his life to the study of “Industrial Society” as the comprehensive study. We are trying to follow his trail with the new subject of “Information Society.” These include, but not limited to:
- Stage and Phase analysis to position Information Society in the long term historic trend of industrialization, modernization and nation-state building.
- Social System analysis dealing with self-organizing patterns in global network phenomena.
- Analysis of production, marketing, distribution and consumption of social knowledge and their social impacts.
We are also keen to apply our results of the study into the formation process of global policy and governance efforts.
We look forward to expanding our research network of people, institutions and networks globally.
